Everything You Can Do with a Florida Cosmetology License

The beauty of a Cosmetology degree is that it is the most comprehensive and flexible degree you can get in the beauty industry. In an accredited Cosmetology program, you’ll learn skills like hair design, cutting and styling, coloring and lightening, skin care, facials, makeup, waxing, manicuring, pedicuring, business operations, and more!

Hair Stylist

Becoming a hair stylist at a spa or salon may be the most popular career choice for licensed cosmetologists, and for good reason.  As a professional stylist, you’ll get to use your creative talents to cut, color, and style hair to make people feel better about themselves – you’ll also do keratin treatments, perms and more. Working as a hair stylist typically gives you some flexibility with your schedule, and you can work virtually anywhere in the world.

Hair Color Specialist

While hair stylists do color and highlights, a hair color specialist makes it their main focus. A hair color specialist has extensive knowledge of the technicalities of hair color, depth and tone, and has mastered a range of coloring techniques. They may also help to correct hair color problems or mistakes.

Makeup Artist

There are many different paths you can take if you decide to use your cosmetology skills and creativity to become a makeup artist. You can do makeup for a salon, weddings and events, fashion shows and photo shoots, become a brand ambassador for a cosmetics company, do makeovers, and even do make up for TV, stage or film productions.

Salon Owner/Manager

If you have an entrepreneurial spirit, you may be able to use your Cosmetology license to build up enough experience to become a manager, or even an owner, of your own salon. In addition to your beauty talents, you’ll need to have business and organizational skills to help you manage people, please your customers, and ensure your salon is operating efficiently and profitably.

Nail Technician

Love nails? You may want to consider becoming a nail technician. You’ll do manicures, pedicures, gel nails, acrylics, extensions, dip nails, and more. And again, you’ll get to be creative, expressing yourself with nail art.

And More!

Cosmetologists work in a wide range of positions – you may be a stylist at a Fashion Show or even teach cosmetology to a new generation of students.

If you’re interested in any of these careers, perhaps it’s time to get on your beauty path! Click here to apply to beauty school or call 877.282.8332 to learn more!

Summer Makeup Trends /2022/08/summer-makeup-trends/ Tue, 16 Aug 2022 16:55:14 +0000 /?p=15518

Summer Makeup Trends

Say goodbye to the smokey eye, your deep burgundy lipstick, and matte everything. While those were great for fall and winter, it’s time to lighten up and have some fun with summer makeup trends. Get ready to heat things up this summer with some unexpected and playful new looks.

Dewy Skin

You’ve likely heard of glass skin (achieved with skincare) or dolphin skin (achieved with makeup) already, but these trends are still going strong for summer. The idea is to make your skin look fresh, luminous, and even a bit wet – like a mermaid emerging from the sea. Proper hydration, products that boost radiance, and a clear skin balm or gloss on top of your makeup can help you achieve this look.

Highlighted Cheekbones

Use liquid or balmy highlighters to get your cheekbones gleaming, like they would naturally in the sun. This simple trick makes your cheekbones look higher, your eyes shine, and your face look more contoured.

Pastel Eyeshadows

Pop out some pretty pastel eyeshadows for summer. Think lavender, pink, baby blue, matcha green, or even a soft yellow. Keep the rest of your makeup palette neutral so your pastels stand out.

Floating Eyeliner

Who says your eyeliner has to sit on your lash line? Floating eyeliner, also known as a floating crease, are bold graphic lines that are drawn above the eye – typically to emphasize your natural crease. There are countless variations of the floating eyeliner – straight, curved, winged, dotted – and in pastels, neons, and yes, even your anything-but-basic black. Search it on your Insta feed and give it a try!

If you enjoy learning about makeup trends and mastering new looks, you should consider turning your passion into a career you love! Click here to apply or call 877.282.8332 to learn more!

5 Back-to-School Beauty Essentials /2022/08/5-back-to-school-beauty-essentials/ Tue, 16 Aug 2022 16:48:46 +0000 /?p=15514

5 Back-to-School Beauty Essentials

It’s hard to believe, but before you know it, summer will be over, and it will be time to head back to school. But the end of summer doesn’t have to be a bummer. Get ready for back-to-school shopping for those must have beauty essentials that will keep you looking your best through all your classes and beyond!

Dry shampoo

Slept through the alarm? Don’t panic! Spray some dry shampoo at the roots of your hair, let it do its oil-absorbing magic, and brush out. It will extend the life of your latest style, preserve your curls, and -especially if you have long hair

A great BB cream

A BB cream is another great time saver and acts as a moisturizer, sunscreen, and light foundation all in one. You’ll look naturally radiant, not overly made up, while protecting and hydrating your skin.

Oil blotting sheets

When it’s the middle of the day and you’re starting to feel a little shiny, oil blotting sheets are your new BFF. You don’t have to redo (or undo) your makeup. Just simply press a discrete little sheet of paper on your face, and watch any excess oil disappear. Keep them handy in your purse or pocket.

Blemish control and cover

Feeling that little tingle that indicates you are about to break out? Zap those zits with the latest acne patches or pens and invisibly begin treatment right away. Or try a concealer that doubles as a blemish medication and save yourself a step.

Makeup remover wipes

Finally, at the end of a long day, be sure to save your skin by taking that makeup off. With makeup remover wipes, your skin will be clean and fresh in a flash. The best makeup remover wipes take off even waterproof mascara with ease.

Trending Hairstyles You Need to Try Now /2022/08/trending-hairstyles-you-need-to-try-now/ Tue, 16 Aug 2022 15:44:36 +0000 /?p=15501

Time to change up your hairstyle!

There’s no faster, more dramatic way to change your look than by cutting and/or coloring your hair! Today there are so many creative options to explore. Check out some of the most popular hairstyles that are trending now.

Balayage

If you haven’t tried balayage yet, hello? What are you waiting for? Balayage is a highlighting technique where your stylist hand paints color directly onto select strands of hair instead of using foils. The result is a more natural, blended, low maintenance look that you can simply let the color grow out if you like. This is especially popular with brunettes wanting some gold, sun-kissed highlights.

Pixie Cut

If you are looking for a super short, shaggy, spikey, or edgy haircut, a pixie cut is right for you! This short cut is stylish and trending among celebs. Our Stylists are ready for you!

Skunk Stripe

Skunk hair looks way cooler than it sounds – it’s basically a bold, two-tone combo (such as black hair with platinum blonde sections). You can use whatever colors you like, but you want high contrast between the shades for maximum impact. Search Instagram for skunk hair to get some inspiration.

Peek-a-boo Color

Not ready to go too bold yet? No worries. With peek-a-boo hair, you color a hidden layer of your hair a bright or playful color (think blue, green or magenta). When your hair is down, the color is hidden, but when you put your hair up or back…peek-a-boo!

Try a New Style or a New Career! If you’re passionate about hair, offers a hands-on Cosmetology Program that will give you the skills you need to get you started in the beauty industry. To learn more, fill out our online form here or call us at 877.282.8332!

Cosmetology Interviews: How to Prepare Yourself for Your Job Interview in the Beauty Industry /2022/05/prepare-yourself-job-interview-beauty-industry/ Mon, 02 May 2022 22:52:40 +0000 /?p=14743 Students sitting at a long table during a career fair.Job interviews can be nerve-wracking, especially when you’re passionate about your career! Whether it’s your first job interview or your 12th interview, you may be worried about making the right impression, communicating confidently, or getting stumped on a critical interview question.

It’s normal to feel nervous or anxious before a job interview!

Now that you know you’re not alone, your friends here at Be 91ąú˛ú have some helpful tips for you as you prepare for your big day. Knowing what to expect can help you feel confident, inspired, and ready to put your best foot forward to land the dream job you deserve.

How to Prepare for a Salon Interview

Tip #1: Do your research on the salon.

Prepare to answer questions about why you applied to work at the salon and what you can bring to the table. Do your research by Googling the salon, reading up on its history (if available), reading about their core values, and reading reviews from their clients and beauty professionals.

It’s a good idea to get a feel for the salon’s culture before you arrive for your interview so you don’t look like a deer in headlights when you’re asked what you like about the salon!

Consider booking a service with a stylist at the salon beforehand for the ultimate recon mission. This will empower you to feel comfortable in the salon, and gives you the opportunity to observe how the stylists work with clients and with each other.

Being prepared (and possibly even over-prepared) is also the best cure for nerves. Thoughtful preparation can help you feel more confident when holding a conversation with the salon owner or manager during your interview, and it shows that you take your career seriously.

Tip #2: Build your portfolio!

Nowadays, having an accessible digital portfolio to showcase your beautiful creations is a must. Consider creating an Instagram beauty portfolio that can not only serve as an easily accessible portfolio, but can be leveraged to show off your talent in the community, connect with existing clients, network with other beauty professionals, and attract new clients too!

You never know who you’ll run into when you’re out and about. Your Instagram profile can serve as your digital business card. And, while you are in school at 91ąú˛ú, we will work with you to help build your online portfolio.

When you post to your business portfolio, be sure to maintain professional posts that represent your quality of service with high-resolution photos and ideal lighting to do your creations justice.

Instagram is all about esthetically-appealing images – which works in your favor as a beauty professional. Build a strong digital portfolio and be prepared to discuss any of your creations during your interview.

Tip #3: Practice interviewing in the mirror, or with a friend.

Hold a mock interview in your bathroom mirror, or with a willing friend, parent or sibling! Practicing your interview ahead of time can help you find the right words when you’re asked to share about yourself, discuss your goals or values, or discuss your past job experience or qualifications.

You don’t want to memorize your answers word–for-word; that can come off as rehearsed and a bit robotic. Memorizing answers doesn’t allow you to show off your personality either! Your personality can be the differentiating factor between you and another interviewee getting the spot. Let the conversation flow.

Review a list of common beauty interview questions and answers to see what you can expect. Pick out an outfit that makes you feel confident and empowered too! When you look good, you feel good.

Be confident. Be you. Be successful!

Remember, you’re interviewing the salon owner or manager and surveying the area just like they’re interviewing and surveying you. That doesn’t mean you should grill them with questions about their qualifications or anything. (That probably won’t leave a good impression.) It just means you’re there to see if the salon is a good fit for you too.

Be confident! Know that you’re a talented artist – whether you’ve already made your mark on the beauty industry or haven’t had your chance yet – and hold yourself as such. Practice confidence by holding good posture, projecting your voice appropriately, and maintaining eye contact.

At your school tour, we encourage you to ask every question you have! We want you to leave feeling informed, confident, and ready to begin a new amazing chapter of your life.

Questions to ask before starting esthetician school or cosmetology school

When you visit a school for a tour, it’s a great idea to come prepared with a list of questions about your cosmetology, esthiology, massage therapy, or barbering program.

If you plan on visiting multiple schools for tours, let the answers to these questions guide you when choosing the right school for you:

  • What programs are available?
  • How long will it take to complete a program?
  • What can I expect to learn?
  • Is the school accredited?
  • What are the application requirements?
  • Do you have any career services to help me get a job after graduation?
  • What does a typical day in the life of a student look like?

Choosing the Right Beauty School for You

After you asked all of the right questions and you gathered your data, assess whether the school you toured will meet your needs. If the school checks all of the boxes, take a look at their culture. Does the school value the same things you do?

At Be 91ąú˛ú, we prioritize our students’ happiness by providing the best education, products, support, and experiences. We put people first and look to nature for inspiration.

Our mission at 91ąú˛ú is to care for the world we live in, from the products we make to the ways in which we give back to society. We strive to set an example for environmental leadership and responsibility, not just in the world of beauty, but around the world.

If you’re someone who strives to dig deeper and master your craft while leaving a positive impact on the world, we’re the right beauty school for you!

What to Ask While Touring a Beauty School /2020/11/what-to-ask-while-touring/ Mon, 02 Nov 2020 13:00:21 +0000 /?p=13500 You’ve set your goals and are on your way to enrolling in beauty school! But, with that comes a large investment – both in time and money. Before you commit, it’s important to ask the right questions when you visit potential schools. Covering all your bases will ensure you set yourself up for success!

1. What type of programs are offered, and what are those program schedules like?

Beauty school is a big commitment, but not every school offers the same programs, structure, and/or scheduling. Schools might offer a variety of programs in cosmetology, esthetics, barbering, and massage or they might only offer very specific options. Each program will likely vary in terms of hours required, weekly schedule, and overall cost.

Further, the program schedules will likely vary drastically from school-to-school. Some schools will run on a “rotating schedule”, where the program is split into segments and you can enroll at any time. Other schools offer a more structured approach, where you build your skills from the ground up as a team alongside your classmates.

What’s most important is that a beauty school’s program offering works best for you. As you approach schools, have a firm grasp on each of the following: what types of programs you’re most interested in, how flexible your weekly schedule will be, and the time commitment you are able to make to a program. Moreover, be sure to communicate that to the schools you visit, so that together you can decide whether they offer programs that will be a perfect fit.

2. Is the school accredited?

Accreditation generally means that a school’s integrity and quality of education has been evaluated by an independent agency. Accredited beauty schools have met certain academic and institutional requirements established by an accrediting organization. The “gold standard” of beauty school accreditation is the National Accrediting Commission for Career Arts and Sciences (NACCAS); their accreditation authority is recognized by the US Department of Education.

Becoming accredited is a VOLUNTARY process for a school; it is not “required.” However, accreditation is a solid indicator that the school offers objectively high-quality education and serves students well. Additionally, only accredited institutions can offer Federal financial aid.

3. What does the curriculum include?

Technique and mastery are everything in the beauty industry. It’s important that your chosen school and program offers both basic training and modern, innovative technique. When touring, ask about the education courses themselves –

  • What specialties are covered in the program?
  • How often are the courses and programs updated?
  • Are new techniques often added to the program?
  • How are classrooms structured?
  • Do students practice on real-world clients?
  • How are students evaluated on their work?
  • Is continuing education offered?

Innovation in a beauty schools program is key – you want to make sure when youenter the working world, the techniques you’ve mastered are relevant to the world you’ll be working in.

4. What are the financial obligations of the program?

A quality education will not come without expense, but the cost should also be comprehensive and fair. Make sure you ask not only about tuition costs, but also what that tuition will include. Find out if all necessary tools (beauty kit, products, technology, printed resources, etc.) will be included in the cost of tuition, or if those will be additional, required expenses. It is also important to inquire about financial aid, and whether the schools accept federal aid or third party scholarships.

4. What post-graduate placement assistance is offered?

Upon graduation, you’ll need to get to work! High-quality beauty schools often have a vast network of salons and spas that value their graduates. Ask each school about their placement rates, employment networks, and networking resources. Enrolling in a school that is respected by the beauty community is one of the best choices you can make!

What Is Beauty School Life Like? /2017/10/what-is-beauty-school-life-like/ Thu, 12 Oct 2017 16:55:19 +0000 /?p=9639

ABOUT ME AND THE BEGINNING

Hey, my name is Abigail Gancayco. I am an aspiring makeup artists and hairstylist currently on my fourteenth week at the 91ąú˛ú Institute in Birmingham, Al in the Cosmetology program. I was a previous student at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, but decided to shift my life completely and start classes at 91ąú˛ú. Figuring out that sometimes your life, personality, or ambitions do not always go hand in hand with what others around you may expect is something many people nowadays face. I am a firm believer in reaching out of your comfort zone; that is where extraordinary things can occur. It can be difficult, it will push your limits, and it will challenge you but in the end everything will be worth it. This is what my experience at 91ąú˛ú has taught me thus far.

Life can change in an instant, and most importantly when you least expect it. I had ended my spring term at UAB in April, the June following is when I began classes at 91ąú˛ú. I had friends and family for years suggest that I go to cosmetology school but I refused because it was not the most socially acceptable thing to do. Everyone expects you to go to college. Cosmetology school is definitely not any easier than college though. From the experiences I have encountered my first few weeks of school I can strongly vouch that cosmetology school is not as easy as others may think. There are going to be trials, there will be tribulations, and there will probably be a few breakdowns. But everything worth something in life will take some sort of effort.

At 91ąú˛ú we go through about five phases which includes: intro, foundations, salon concepts, master juniors, and master seniors. These phases typically last about 10 weeks each and the entirety of the program last about 12 months. I felt as if I was always facing a new challenge each week in intro. Some may not recognize that not only with cosmetology do you have the actual book work which can include an extent of some biology and physics, but alongside you are also learning a technical skill. It is not easy, no matter what some may claim. I remember the middle of the intro phase we were instructed to perform a basic one length hair cut. For some reason I was not able to have it perfectly even at that time and I had become utterly frustrated. I had a few meltdowns that day. In forethought it seemed as if it were a piece a cake, it just had to be a simple cut. But in hindsight, it was the hardest haircut I have learned so far. As Ben Francia has said, “What comes easy won’t last long, and what will last won’t always come easy.” If you can overcome difficult times, you can only become a stronger person in multiple aspects. After my trials I underwent in intro I have moved on to foundations with more courage, ambition, and the desire to become better each day.
